 FAQs

  • An Independent Medical Examination (IME) is an objective psychiatric evaluation conducted by a qualified occupational psychiatrist. It is used to assess an individual’s mental health, functional capacity, and/or fitness for work in the context of employment or insurance matters. IMEs provide an impartial medical opinion regarding the presence of a mental health condition or disability, and how it affects the ability to work.

IMEs are commonly used by employers, insurers, regulatory bodies, and legal professionals to:

    • Clarify complex psychiatric conditions

    • Assess fitness-for-duty

    • Evaluate ongoing eligibility for disability benefits

    • Guide accommodation and return-to-work planning

The psychiatrist conducting the IME may also serve as an expert witness, providing testimony based on medical evidence.

  • Organizations should consider requesting a psychiatric IME when:

    • An employee’s mental health is impacting their ability to work or perform job duties safely

    • There is a delay or uncertainty in return-to-work (RTW)

    • Disability claims require clarification of diagnosis or functional limitations

These evaluations offer a comprehensive and unbiased assessment to support:

    • Fitness-for-duty decisions

    • Restrictions or accommodations

    • Disability claims management

    • RTW planning

  • Psychiatric IMEs play a key role in return-to-work efforts by evaluating:

    • Current symptoms and recovery progress

    • Psychological readiness for work

    • Work-related limitations or restrictions

The results guide practical steps for treatment, workplace reintegration, and accommodations—helping employers, insurers, and RTW teams support successful outcomes. In more complex situations, IME psychiatrists may also serve as expert witnesses.

  • Beyond IMEs, occupational psychiatrists provide consulting and education services to support workplace mental health, including:

    • Training & Education: Evidence-based workshops for managers and teams to recognize and address mental health concerns.

    • Policy & Program Support: Expert input on disability policy, best practices, and mental health strategies.

    • Mental Health Challenges: Guidance on managing burnout, anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders in the workplace.

    • Workplace Stressors: Insight into how job demands, conflict, and role ambiguity affect employee wellbeing.

    • Legal & Insurance Support: Assistance with accommodations, communication between parties, and expert witness services for employment or insurance-related disputes.
